MY HUSBAND MARRIED A HOOKER!

(Peppering your prose with reading hooks)

"I couldn't put it down!" That's the accolade every writer longs to hear. The trick to writing a page turner is adding hooks in all the right places, not just at the end of chapters. Learn to tease your reader into one more page, one more chapter and they'll run out the next morning to buy one more of your books!

WHAT A NOVEL IDEA!

(Story Structure)

How can a writer be sure  her story isn't full of holes or missed opportunities? Listen to the voices of the ancient bards. For centuries, story-tellers have been perfecting the craft of weaving tales. We can stand on their shoulders.

Based of Christopher Vogler's The Writers Journey, Emily explains the mythic structures that form plot points your readers are already pre-programmed to respond to. WHAT A NOVEL IDEA will help writers be certain their plots will hit all the readers' (and editor's!) hot-buttons.

MEAT ON THE BONES

(Character development)

Romances are character-driven works of fiction. This workshop offers techniques for creating characters that breathe on their own. Readers want to feel the characters are still off having adventures without them once the story ends!

MEAT ON THE BONES will help writers craft characters who feel so strongly, fail so utterly, and love so deeply, readers will be transported by their experience.

THE JOY OF WRITING SEX

(It's not just for Romance Writers anymore!)

Sex is more than dirty words scrawled on the bathroom walls. It's part of being human. As writers, we can't afford to ignore the gem mine of conflicts, hopes and disappointment that wait for our characters in their bedrooms. This workshop will explore the special world of writing about our character's sex lives without apology (though I can't promise no giggles!).

Sex is funny. And dramatic. And heartbreaking and transporting. Find out what it means to your characters and you'll be well on your way to knowing them well enough to tell their story.

After attending THE JOY OF WRITING SEX, writers will be equipped to show what happens in the character's bedroom and take their readers along with them.

NEUROTICA

(Adding humor to your prose)

“Make us laugh or cry, and we'll get you a deal.
Make us do both, and we'll get you an auction.”

~ Andrea Brown, Literary Agent

Humor takes many forms. NEUROTICA attendees will learn to recognize their humor quotient. Not everyone writes wacky, over-the-top, laugh out loud stories. They also serve who deliver the knowing smile, the gentle smirk and the involuntary giggle.

Writing comedy can be learned. We’ll visit some of the tried and true methods of injecting humor into a manuscript, using word plays, creating humorous characters, and funny plot twists.  Rediscover the joy of writing by letting your playful side take the reins. Then when you’re finished, you can join comedian Steve Martin in saying “I think I did pretty well considering I started with nothing but a bunch of blank paper!”
